Siouxland Community Foundation awards grants

SIOUX CITY -- The Siouxland Community Foundation recently approved distributions totaling $38,516 for grants and scholarships from the United Airlines Trust Fund. Seven nonprofit organizations and three Sioux City colleges will receive funding to help support their mission.
More than half a million dollars has been awarded in grants and scholarships from this fund since the first distributions were made in 1990.
United Airlines donated $600,000 to the Siouxland Community Foundation to establish the United Airlines Trust Fund, an endowed community grants and scholarship program, in remembrance of Siouxland's response to the United Flight 232 crash in 1989. Each year, two-thirds of the income generated from this endowed fund is distributed in equal amounts to Briar Cliff University, Morningside College and Western Iowa Tech Community College to assist students pursuing an education in emergency rescue, nursing, medical care, counseling, social work, clergy or law enforcement. The remaining one-third is awarded in grants to nonprofit organizations to enhance the ability of Siouxland communities to respond in emergency and disaster situations or to address public safety issues.
"Each year the Foundation receives many more requests than it can support, compelling the board to make funding decisions based on the number of proposals received, worthiness of the project, relative need, and potential impact -- resulting in the greatest good for the greatest number," said Debbie Hubbard, executive director.
This year, United Airlines Trust Fund scholarship distributions and awarded grants, were allocated to:
-- American Red Cross, Siouxland Area Chapter: $2,295 -- Toward purchase of two water rescue mannequins and other training equipment. Siouxland Red Cross trains several hundred students as lifeguards each year.
-- City of Moville: $2,500 -- Support toward replacement of city's tornado siren. New siren would provide coverage for entire community. After a recent disaster drill, the current system (in use since the 1960s) was unable to be heard by many citizens.
-- City of Soldier: $1,100 -- Awarded funds for a propane tank for Soldier's Volunteer Fire Department. Project will keep fire trucks from freezing up and provide adequate storage for oxygen and blood pressure equipment.
-- Hawarden Volunteer Fire Department: $1,491 -- Funds to purchase piercing nozzles. Equipment will allow firefighter to extinguish fires without forcible entry.
-- Ponca Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department: $2,000 -- Funding toward the purchase of a Lifepak 12 AED (automated external defibrillator) for the primary response ambulance.
-- Sioux City Fire Department: $950 -- Support toward the purchase a XT675 Treadmill. Treadmill would enhance the physical fitness program developed by the Sioux City Fire Dept. Fitness Committee.
-- Woodbury County Emergency & Disaster Services: $2,500 -- Woodbury County Emergency & Disaster Services is a countywide emergency planning & response agency that interfaces with all fire and rescue departments and ambulance services within said County. Current project, The Security Institute, is a collaboration between Woodbury County, city of Sioux City, WIT, and the state of Iowa. Security Institute is being constructed on the WIT campus and will be in operation by Nov.1. Funding to help furnish the facility's upper and lower level common areas with furnishings.
-- Briar Cliff University, Morningside College and Western Iowa Tech Community College: $25,680 or $8,560 each: To make United Airlines Trust Fund scholarships available for students at each college.
