Wildcats clinch MVC North Division crown

MOVILLE, Iowa -- Woodbury Central clinched the North Division of the Maple Valley Conference with a 10-2 triumph over Remsen-Union here Thursday night.

The Wildcats, now 15-3 overall, finished with a 14-1 record in the North Division.

Winning pitcher Caleb Hancock allowed three hits while striking out five and was 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and double. Jeffrey Grell finished 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Remsen-Union's Travis Fulton was 2-for-3 at the plate.

L-B 7, West Sioux 1

LAWTON, Iowa -- Lawton-Bronson defeated West Sioux 7-1 here Thursday night.

Ethan Logsdon pitched a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 13, while Mike Smith had three hits for the Eagles. L-B improved its overall record to 14-3.

West Sioux's Jonny Strong reached base three times.

Cherokee 16, Storm Lake 0

CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Cody Ege was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs Thursday as top-ranked (Class 2A) Cherokee whipped Storm Lake 16-0 in a Lakes Conference game called after three innings because of the 15-run mercy rule.

Tim Jones hit his fourth home run of the season for Cherokee (20-1, 12-0 Lakes), added a single and drove in three runs. Matt Koch doubled, singled and drove in two runs while Scott Brown and Kyle Schuett each added two hits.

Koch allowed two hits and struck out six.

Michael McCabe had two hits for Storm Lake (17-6, 7-6).

Denison-Schleswig 7-9, Shenandoah 5-2

DENISON, Iowa -- Corey Stapleton and Cody VanNess each hit two home runs and drove in six and five runs, respectively, while leading Denison-Schleswig to a 7-5, 9-2 Hawkeye 10 Conference doubleheader sweep over Shenandoah Wednesday night.

Stapleton, in the opener, highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a two-run home run as the Monarchs stretched a 3-1 lead. He hiked his pitching record to 5-0, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out eight in five and two-thirds innings, while getting offensive support from VanNess and Colin Straight, who each went 2-for-4. Kenny Nammany got the last four outs of the game for his eighth save of the season.

VanNess was 2-for-4 in the nightcap for Denison-Schleswig (19-3, 11-1 Hawkeye 10), including a three-run home run in the first inning and a solo homer in the sixth. Stapleton's 2-for-4 slate was topped by a grand slam in the six-run sixth inning while Kerry Fineran doubled twice and Brandon Scherff tripled. Winning pitcher Nathan Bruck (5-0) yielded three hits in five innings.

MOC-Floyd Valley 6, B-H/RV 5

ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Siouxland Conference leader MOC-Floyd Valley scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a passed ball and edged Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 6-5 Wednesday night.

Nic Bakker and Marcus Heemstra each doubled and singled for B-H/RV, which led 5-2 before the Dutchmen rallied to tie the game with three runs the sixth.
