SB-L sweeps Spalding Catholic

SERGEANT BLUFF -- Strong pitching carried Sergeant Bluff-Luton to a War Eagle Conference sweep of Granville Spalding Catholic here Thursday night.

Lexie Matthey twirled a perfect game in the Warriors' 7-0 victory in the opener while Kelsey Hanson had a one-hitter in the nightcap, won by SB-L 12-1 in five innings.

Matthey struck out eight and helped her own cause with three hits. Betsy Thomas had a triple, double and three RBIs.

Hanson allowed only a second-inning single to Jess Fischer, striking out three. Aeriell Earleywine had three singles and drove in three runs while Jamie Shultz added a homer and single, driving in two. Emily Anderson, Hanson and Leah Nielsen chipped in two hits each.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, moved to 28-4 overall and 15-1 in the War Eagle.

Estherville LC 6, Sheldon 2

SHELDON, Iowa -- Estherville-Lincoln Central scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and downed Sheldon 6-2 in a Lakes Conference makeup game here Thursday.

After Estherville-LC scored a run in the first inning, the Orabs tied it in the sixth. Each team tallied a run in the seventh before the Midgettes came up with four in the eighth.

Erin Beardsly was 4-for-5 with an RBI while Kristi Juergens was 3-for-4 with a double for Estherville-Lincoln Central. Kendall Bosch pitched the final two innings for the victory.

Sheldon's Keesha Simington was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Estherville-Lincoln Central moved to 23-7 overall and 9-3 in the Lakes.

Sheldon 3, Cherokee 2

SHELDON, Iowa -- Mackenzie Gustafson singled home Liz Ihnen in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving Sheldon a 3-2 Lakes Conference win over Cherokee here Thursday in a regularly-scheduled contest.

Becca Fischer was 4-for-5 and scored a run for Sheldon, now 16-13 overall and 5-8 in the Lakes. Shelby Vogel went the distance, striking out seven to earn the pitching win.

Cherokee's Kelsie Petersen had two hits.

Lawton-Bronson 7, Odebolt-Arthur 0

ARTHUR, Iowa -- Erica Thompon allowed three hits and struck out three as Lawton-Bronson blanked 10th-ranked (Class 1A) Odebolt-Arthur 7-0 in Maple Valley Conference play Thursday night.

Katelyn Brockhaus tripled and singled for Lawton-Bronson (14-12, 7-3 MVC) while the Eagles also got two hits from Katie Sorenson, Mandy Wagner, Kalifornia Gray and Mackenzie Masching.

Brittany Walsh suffered the pitching loss for Odebolt-Arthur (20-8, 6-5).

River Valley 6, Remsen-Union 0

CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa -- Jody Peterson allowed three hits and struck out five as River Valley blanked Remsen-Union 6-0 in Maple Valley Conference action Thursday night.

Alissa Slota hit an RBI double for River Valley.

Maple Valley MVAO 20, Galva-Holstein 10

MAPLETON, Iowa -- Steph Petersen highlighted a 13-hit attack with a three-run home run as Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto improved to 21-10 and 10-1 in the Maple Valley Conference with a 20-10 win in six innings over Galva-Holstein Thursday night.

Sisters Brea and Kara Slaybaugh combined for six of Galva-Holstein's 11 hits.

Denison-Schleswig 3-8, Shenandoah 0-3

DENISON, Iowa -- Sam Clauson pitched a no-hitter and struck out three as Denison-Schleswig blanked Shenandoah 3-0, then completed the Hawkeye 10 Conference sweep with an 8-3 triumph in the nightcap.

Clauson and Amanda Eller each went 2-for-3 in the opener for the Monarchs while Syanne Nelson doubled.

Denison-Schleswig rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second game. Alicia Ullrich tripled and singled while Paige Kinzer doubled and singled. Sydney Weber contributed a pair of singles for a squad that snapped a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fifth inning.
