SIOUX CITY -- A man motorists spotted riding a bicycle naked down a busy Sioux City street apparently got the police attention he wanted.
Then he was arrested.
Sioux City Police Sgt. Tony Sunclades said authorities began receiving reports around 6 a.m. Monday that a naked man was riding a bicycle down Floyd Boulevard.
He said the man, Douglas Coney of Sioux City, allegedly climbed aboard the bicycle without clothes on because he wanted to attract police attention so they would give him a ride to the hospital.
Coney, who Sunclades said appeared to be intoxicated, allegedly wanted the hospital to admit him so he could sober up.
"He wanted the cops to take him to the hospital and make the hospital treat him, detox him," Sunclades said.
It wasn't clear where Coney was coming from, but Sunclades said the man was first spotted at Floyd Boulevard and Chambers Street. Officers found him a few blocks later.
"There were several calls on him," Sunclades said.
Police took Coney to a local hospital, but Sunclades said the man ended up in jail. While at the hospital, Coney allegedly took off the blanket police had given him to cover up and exposed himself to several nurses in the emergency room.
Coney was arrested on charges of indecent exposure and public intoxication.
Although Monday's incident was unusual, Sunclades said it wasn't unheard of, noting officers have arrested naked people riding bicycles, motorcycles, in cars as well as walking along on foot.
