Heelan finishes 2-0 in own classic

Bishop Heelan went 2-0 during the Heelan Classic at Lewis and Clark Park Saturday, winning baseball games over Storm Lake (12-5) and East (8-2).

Conor Krommenhoek went the distance, fanning seven batters in the win over East. Heelan jumped out with five runs in the first inning, highlighted by Tanner Oliver's two-run home run. Oliver later added a double while T.J. Obermeyer had three hits for Heelan.

Heelan handled Storm Lake 12-5 with four players collecting at least two hits. Andy Lawler led the way with two doubles and a single while Evan Knowlton also had three hits and scored two runs. David Kerian colleced two hits and scored three runs while Joe Greer had two hits and scored twice.

Brandon Stewart was the beneficiary of the hit parade, going the distance for the mound victory. Stewart scatttered eight hits, struck out three and walked three. Storm Lake's Brandon Miller had two hits.

East, now 23-9, opened the day's action with a 15-10 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Scott Lahn had a two-run home run, his eighth of the year, while Jordan Huffman had four hits and John Mascarello added three safeties for the Warriors.

West split games, outscoring Sergeant Bluff-Luton 12-9 and losing to Storm Lake 6-5.

West erased a 7-2 Sergeant Bluff-Luton lead with nine runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Dan Foreman finished 4-for-5 with three doubles and three RBIs while Alex Jones was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Blake Ouelette rapped three hits and drove in three runs for the Wolverines while Travis Hanson added two hits and an RBI and Dex Gordon two hits.

Gordon picked up the pitching win, working the first 4 2/3 innings before Hanson finished the contest on the mound. Gordon gave up eight hits, struck out eight and walked three.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton's Jordan Huffman was 3-for-4 while Micah Stulich added two hits and drove in two. Losing pitcher John Mascarello was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Jake Wimmer had a two-run homer in the first inning.

Storm Lake's Michael McCabe plated Courtney Goodchild with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning in a see-saw game with the Wolverines. Nolan Cone paced the Tornadoes with three hits while McCabe and winning pitcher Miller chipped in two hits apiece.

West's C.J. Nolen was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI while Tyler Nolen also had two hits. Matt Henning suffered the pitching loss in relief of C.J. Nolen.

West is 12-21 and hosts Le Mars in a JV-varsity doubleheader on Monday.
