Cherokee's defending state champs face a stern test tonight in a Class 2A district semfinal in Cherokee against Westwood.

While 2A teams return the tourney trail tonight, first-round action commences in Class 1A.

St. Mary's and Spalding collide at 7 o'clock after Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn and Remsen-Union meet at 5 o'clock in Remsen. Class 1A district semifinals are Thursday.

Should Alta and Clay Central-Everly advance to the district finals they would meet Saturday in Spencer.
The Sioux Central team that defeated Twin River Valley in a 2A district opener and meets Okoboji tonight in Emmetsburg in a district semifinal, also boasts speed. Standout Trevor Tiefenthaler was the Class 1A 400-meter champ in the state track meet in Des Moines.
