STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Jeff Kofmehl recorded two hits and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a suicide-squeeze bunt by Nolan Cone as Storm Lake rallied for a 3-2 non-conference win over Denison-Schleswig Wednesday night.
Storm Lake (20-9) scored twice in the sixth, getting a solo home run from Tony Pertzborn. It was Pertzborn's third home run of the season.
Winning pitcher Dylan Freking allowed four hits and three walks while striking out two.
Denison-Schleswig (21-10) got a double from Colin Straight. Taylor Starman suffered the pitching loss in relief.
Each team will start Class 3A district tournament action Friday night. Storm Lake will play a 7 p.m. game at Spirit Lake while Denison-Schleswig opens with a 7 p.m. game at Carroll.
Alta 8, Laurens-Marathon 5
ALTA, Iowa -- Home runs from Scott Radke and Cody Nesbitt were among the highlights as sixth-ranked Alta opened the Class 1A district tournament with an 8-5 win over Laurens-Marathon Tuesday night.
Radke's eighth home run of the season was a two-run shot in the first inning. Nesbitt's second homer of the season, a solo in the second inning, was part of a 2-for-3 performance.
Ben Stevens doubled twice for Alta (26-4), which will host Storm Lake St. Mary's in a semifinal that will start at 7 p.m. Thursday. Winning pitcher Austin Stille allowed six hits and struck out six.
Taylor Smith singled twice for Laurens-Marathon.
Storm Lake St. Mary's advanced with a 6-5 win over Newell-Fonda. No information about the game was available.
Schaller-Crestland 14, River Valley 3
HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- Collin Johnson had three hits and scored three times to lead Schaller-Crestland to a 14-3 win over River Valley in a Class 1A district quarterfinal here Tuesday.
Winning pitcher Mitch Lyons also added a three-run home run while Matt Struchen added two hits for the Wildcats, now 4-15. River Valley closes out its season with an 0-21 mark.
Schaller-Crestland, will take on Galva-Holstein in a district semifinal Thursday.
Galva-Holstein 10, Aurelia 0
HOLSTEIN, Iowa -- Galva-Holstein cruised past Aurelia 10-0 in a Class 1A district quarterfinal round game here Tuesday.
Cole Egger had a two-run double while Gunner McCurdy added an RBI single for the Pirates, now 11-16. Kyle Yearous pitched the first four innings to get the win.
Aaron Bruce had a double for Aurelia, which ended its season with a 1-16 record.
Gehlen Catholic 4, Kingsley-Pierson 1
LE MARS, Iowa -- Craig Schlesser pitched a perfect game through five innings as Gehlen Catholic advanced to the Class 1A district semifinals with a 4-1 win over Kingsley-Pierson Tuesday night.
Jordan Sitzmann was 2-for-2 with one RBI for Gehlen (19-10), which will host Lawton-Bronson in a semifinal Thursday. The Jays also got RBI singles from Eric Rohe and Schlesser, who allowed two hits and struck out eight.
K-P's Travis Neumann broke Schlesser's perfecto with a leadoff single in the sixth inning. Tyler Sudbeck singled and later scored in the seventh.
B-H/RV 7, Western Christian 6
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- Brad Oostra was 4-for-4 and scored the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh inning on Colby Wegter's infield single as Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley edged Western Christian 7-6 in a Class 2A district semifinal Tuesday night.
Keaton Grevengoed doubled, singled and drove in three runs for B-H/RV (16-12). Zach Van Engen was 2-for-3.
Theo Bartman topped Western Christian with two hits.
North Scott 8, Denison-Schleswig 2
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Cole Prater pitched a six-hitter as North Scott clipped Denison-Schleswig 8-2 in non-conference action at the University of Iowa baseball field Tuesday.
Kenny Nammany had two hits for Denison-Schleswig (21-9), including a RBI single in the fourth inning that pulled his team within 4-1. Nathan Bruck was 2-for-2 for the Monarchs while losing pitcher Cody VanNess hit a solo home run in the seventh.
