SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Gov. Dave Heineman is scheduled today to announce the construction of a $100 million biodiesel plant in South Sioux City.

Natural Innovative Renewable Energy LLC intends to build the alternative fuels factory on a 10-acre site in the Roth Industrial Park.

The limited liability company, formerly known as Northwest Iowa Renewable Energy, was started in 2005 by a group of area investors who planned to build a biodiesel plant near Akron, Iowa.

The proposed South Sioux City venture would be the first biodiesel plant for the northeast Nebraska city. Expected to create at least 35 jobs, it also would be the second largest capital investment in city history, behind only the $400 million expansion Beef Products Inc. announced in late 2006, City Administrator Lance Hedquist told the Journal Thursday.

City officials had hoped to keep secret Natural Innovative Renewable Energy's identity prior to today's 3 p.m. news conference. But the governor's own schedule, e-mailed late Thursday to reporters, inadvertently listed the company name.

While in South Sioux City today, Heineman also will help dedicate the 450-acre Roth Industrial Park, named for BPI founders Eldon and Regina Roth, and the site of the new BPI facilities under construction.

In addition, the governor this afternoon will take part in groundbreaking ceremonies for three other industries planning significant investments in the Roth park -- oats processor 21st Century Grain, Omega Industries, a manufacturer of concrete rail crossings and Peerless Energy Systems, a provider of industry equipment.

Combined, the three projects, announced by the city over the past week, would result in a capital investment of some $16 million and the addition of nearly 70 new jobs.

South Sioux City economic development director Dan McNamara said the city plans to roll out three to four more economic development projects in the coming days.

"This is not the end,'' he said Thursday. "We've got more announcements next week.''

SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- Gov. Dave Heineman today is scheduled to tour the new Green Planet Farms organic soybean processing plant in South Sioux City. The visit, which includes a lunch, coincides with the opening of the company's corporate offices.
Green Planet Farm, which is expected to begin production in the early fall, currently has 16 employees and anticipates growing the work force to 60 to 70 within a year, said Dennis Christiansen, company president and CEO.
The investment in infrastructure, building and plant totals $40 million.
