Urbandale's Brown wins Lake Creek Amateur

STORM LAKE, Iowa -- Jon Brown of Urbandale birdied the last three holes to overtake Mike Ketchum of Waukee at the Lake Creek Amateur golf tournament at Lake Creek Country Club here Sunday.
Brown, who won the 2006 Iowa Amateur Championship at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City, shot a sizzling 7-under-par 65 in the final round on Sunday. His 54-hole total of 11-under 205 also included rounds of 68 and 72.
The Lake Creek Amateur is one of the designated point tournaments which helps determine the Iowa Golf Association Player of the Year.
Ketchum, who finished at 68-69-70--207, currently stands second in the player of the year standings behind 20-year-old Jack Newman of Des Moines.
Wade Pettit of Carroll wound up third with 73-68-68--209 while Ross Menske of Ames was fourth at 72-71-68--211.
Bret Taylor of Council Bluffs, a former head professional at Sioux City's Two Rivers Golf Club, Dakota Dunes Country Club and Green Valley Golf Club, tied for fifth with another familiar face to Sioux City golfers, J.D. Anderson of West Des Moines.
Taylor, who regained his amateur status this year and tied for second at the Tri-State Masters in May, carded 71-72-70--213. Anderson, winner of the last four Interstate Amateur Championships at Two Rivers, also closed at 3-under 213 with rounds of 71-69-73.
Todd Sapp of Sioux City finished in a four-way tie for eighth after shooting 72-70-75--217, or 1-over-par.
Newman, a Des Moines Hoover graduate, defeated 21-year-old John Chin of Temecula, Calif., 5 and 3, in Saturday's 36-hole final of the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. Newman received an invitation to the 2009 Masters in Augusta, Ga., and is exempt to the 2008 U.S. Amateur.
The Public Links victory earned Newman 800 points in the player of the year race. Ketchum (675) and Brown (660) have each counted four events.
Aaron Clausen (72-68--150) won the first flight at Lake Creek. Other flight winners were Kirk Macumber (79-77--156), Chad Pitts (76-83--159), Ken Curell (78-85--163) and Doug Clausen (77-93--170).
Bill Manske (73-71--144) of Algona clipped Joel Yunek (70-75) by one shot and Jim Curell of Boone (75-71) to win the Senior Division.
