Harkin announces housing grants

Sioux City -- Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, announced Wednesday that $2.45 million has been awarded to the city of Sioux City for various housing-related and community development programs.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development approved $1.87 million in grants for its Community Block Grant programs. The HOME Investment Partnerships will provide $497,773, while the Emergency Shelter Grants program will help pay for $84,042 in emergency housing.
Harkin is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
"These funds will help Sioux City families with modest incomes obtain quality housing and pursue economic opportunities," he said in a prepared statement. "In these especially rough times for homeowners, and those looking to purchase a home, I hope these funds will help strengthen neighborhoods in Sioux City."
