City awards $50K in grants

SIOUX CITY -- Programs ranging from helping students with after-school projects to neighborhood mediation will receive a boost Monday when city lawmakers award $50,000 in the Opportunity Fund grants.
In addition, the council is slated to approve $79,840 in emergency service grants.
For the opportunity grants, Cheryl Connot-Perez, neighborhood services supervisor, said Friday, "They can apply in a number of categories."
Eligible categories were neighborhood beautification, children and youth, fair housing counseling, social services and cultural diversity. The money must benefit people at or below 80 percent of the median family income or the services must be provided in the Greenville, Jones Street or Rose Hill urban renewal areas.
The city received $50,000 from the federal Community Development Block Grant monies, but the total of all eight applications submitted needed was $118,139, Connot-Perez said. A committee evaluated the applications and recommended the council award grants tot he following groups:
-- $5,000 to Big 12 Youth Development for an after school program.
-- $5,000 to Community Action Agency of Siouxland for neighborhood mediation.
-- $9.500 to East Middle School for its Ready, Set, Achieve Club.
-- $5,000 to Goodwill Industries for its Shoes of Love program.
-- $12,000 to Mary J. Treglia Community House for its Community Connection Program.
-- $8,500 to Sioux City Human Rights Commission for fair housing counseling programs.
-- $5,000 to Siouxland Human Investment Partnership for an "Extreme Art" program, for an after school program at Hunt Elementary School.
For the emergency shelter and homeless shelter grants, the Department of Housing and Urban Development provided money for:
-- $10,000 for the Center for Siouxland to pay for a part-time case manager at Bridges West and $5,000 to pay the salary of a Bridges West employee.
-- $30,000 for the Council on Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence to pay for salary, insurance, utilities and furnishings.
-- $13,000 for the Crittenton Center to buy furniture for a program helping displaced young people and $7,100 for operating expenses.
-- $6,500 for Shesler Hall to help pay operating expenses
-- $8,240 for Women Aware Homeless Prevention Program to help defray rent and utility payments and security deposits on the first month's rent.
