SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- South Sioux City moved to within a victory of a berth in the Nebraska State Senior Legion tournament, edging Fremont 3-2 in Class A district action Friday at Klasey Park.
Cownie Church Post 307 scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning, then held off a Fremont rally in the ninth. Third-seeded South Sioux City, moving to 28-19 overall, will play Grand Island Home Federal, the top seed, in the winners bracket final at 5 p.m. Sunday.
The winner of that game earns an automatic state berth, since the top two teams from each district qualify.
Two Fremont throwing errors led to the three runs, but second-seeded Fremont scored twice in the ninth and had the bases loaded before Ben Cardwell got the final out on a grounder to short. Cardwell relieved starter Adrien Barerra, who gave up three hits in 8 1/3 innings, striking out 14 and walking eight.
Barerra improved his pitching record to 10-2.
Post 307 finished with six hits, including two by Tyler Hohenstein. Fremont wound up with four hits.
In Friday's earlier game, Grand Island Home Federal breezed past Norfolk 13-0 in seven innings.
Columbus plays Norfolk at 5 p.m. in an elimination game today while the Grand Island Chiefs meet Fremont at 8 o'clock.
