DES MOINES -- Benefitting from a 37-5 season and the No. 2 state ranking, Sioux City North landed perhaps a school record five Class 4A berths on the 2008 Iowa Newspaper Association All-State Baseball team announced today.
North junior pitcher Dean McArdle, sophomore shortstop Damek Tomscha and junior outfielder Nick Tillo were named to the first team and senior pitcher Corby McGlauflin and senior outfielder Brian Wanner were second-team selections.
Sioux City East junior infielder Jerad Barth was picked to the third squad after hitting .479 for a Black Raider squad that lost in a substate final to North.
In Class 3A, Sioux City Bishop Heelan dropped a substate semifinal to Sergeant Bluff-Luton and two Crusaders, first-team pitcher Conor Krommenhoek and second-team utility pick Tanner Oliver were honored.
Krommenhoek, a junior, was 6-1 with a 2.19 earned run average for the Crusaders and Oliver, a move-in from Colorado, played his senior season as the everyday catcher for Coach Andy Osborne. The Briar Cliff recruit hit .373.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton, denied a state tourney berth by Estherville-Lincoln Central, landed first baseman Jordan Huffman on the second team and pitcher Levi Maxfield and outfielder John Mascarello on the third team.
Early in the season, Maxfield, a junior, pitched no-hitters in three consecutive starts.
Denison-Schleswig infielder Cody Van Ness was named to the first team, while Estherville-Lincoln Central's Matt Gruhlke made the second team and teammate Keith Fandel the third team.
In Class 1A, senior outfielder Eric Rohe of Le Mars Gehlen Catholic made the first team and teammate Craig Schlesser, a senior pitcher, landed on the second team. Also from Northwestn Iowa, Adam Elbert of Clay Central-Everly was a third-team infield choice.
The captains of the four honor squads are Andrew Host of Southeast Polk (4A), B.J. Hermsen of Manchester West Delaware (3A), Willie Argo of Davenport Assumption (2A) and Reggie Hochstedler of Iowa Mennonite School (1A).
Hermsen, a senior and sixth-round draft choice of the Minnesota Twins, was 10-0 as a pitcher and hit .425 with 23 home runs and 71 RBIs. He led his team to the state title in 2007, but his No. 1 club was upset in the state tourney semifinals this time around by eventual state champion Centerville.
Hermsen has also signed with Oregon State and will soon make a decision to sign a pro contract or enroll at either Oregon State or Des Moines Area Community College.
Host, the captain of the 4A team, led Southeast Polk to a state tourney berth with a school-record 29 wins. He scored 70 runs to lead all 4A players in that department.
Argo, the 2A captain, is a University of Illinois recruit. An all-stater in football as well and the state runner-up in wrestling at 189 pounds, helped his team edge reigning state champ Cherokee, 4-2, in the title game at Principal Park last Saturday.
Hochstedler, a Northern Iowa recruit, pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the first round of the state tournament to finish with an 11-0 record.
North's McArdle was 11-0 with an 0.75 ERA before losing to Marshalltown in a first-round 4A state tournament upset. The junior's loss in the state tourney was his first since dropping a substate final decision to Mason City when he was a freshman.
The slick-fielding Tomscha hit .492 for the Stars and Tillo led the state in RBIs with a whopping 80, third best in a season in state history, and hit .502.
McGlauflin, a Southwest Minnesota State recruit, was 9-1 with a 1.15 ERA and also handled designated hitter chores for Coach Brian Drent's Stars.
Wanner, a fleet outfielder, hit .395 for the Missouri River Activities Conference champs.
Cherokee's state runner-up team landed pitcher/shortstop Matt Koch, a junior, on the first team, and sophomore/pitcher Cody Ege was selected to the second team and catcher Tyler Jones the third squad.
Also in 2A, Central Lyon outfielder Jordan Gacke, a two-time state wrestling champ, made the third team.
The teams were selected by a committee of sports writers from around the state with informational input from representatives from the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association.
