Lewis & Clark re-enactment returns Aug. 16-17

SIOUX CITY -- Re-enactors dressed in 19th century outfits will hold reveilles, flag-raising ceremonies and hold cooking and blacksmith demonstrations in the Sergeant Floyd Memorial Encampment.
The 19th annual event will take place Aug. 16-17 on the grounds of the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center, at 1000 Lassen Park Road.
Historical re-enactors with Discovery Corps, based in Omaha, and the Sergeant Floyd Honor Guard, based in Sioux City, will hold the demonstrations.
On Saturday, Aug. 16: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the re-enactors, Lewis and Clark historian Bev Hinds of Sioux City will give a talk on "Men of the Expedition." Activities for families will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 17: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Continuation of activities. At 6 p.m., the public is invited to attend the Sergeant Floyd burial re-enactment ceremony at the Sergeant Floyd Monument.
Re-enactors in full dress uniforms will relate the history of the monument and give readings about the life of Sergeant Charles Floyd, who died near that spot on Aug. 20, 1804. He was the only member of the expedition to die during the 3-year trek from St. Louis, Mo., to the Pacific Ocean and back from 1804-06.
The encampment will be sponsored by the Sioux City Public Museum and the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center. All events are free. For more information call (712) 279-0198 or log on to www.siouxcitymuseum.org.
