County-run rest home in Neb. faces discipline

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A county-run nursing home in McCook faces disciplinary action for what its administrator called an isolated incident.
Peggy Rogers, administrator of Hillcrest Nursing Home, confirmed Friday that there was an isolated incident there on June 15 but declined to say what happened.
Rogers said the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was notified within 24 hours and a formal report was filed within five days.
According to a letter from the state dated July 18, the nursing home failed to protect residents from abuse.
Details of the incident were not included in the letter. Department spokeswoman Marla Augustine said some information would become public record after an administrative hearing, but complete details would not be disclosed.
The letter stated that the nursing home will be placed on probation for 90 days, starting Saturday. During that time, the home must review its policies and procedures and present a correction plan to the state.
Rogers said the facility is working on a corrective plan but will appeal the state assessment of deficiency.
She would not say whether any employees were disciplined as a result of the incident.
In a news release issued earlier this week, Rogers said staff members, residents and residents' families are continually educated about residents' rights and the steps made to protect them.
Red Willow County owns the 120-bed nursing home, which is mix of private and semiprivate rooms. According to its Web site, the home employs 160 people and operates as a nonprofit.
County clerk Pauletta Gerver said Friday that county officials had no comment.
