MAPLETON, Iowa -- Alice L. Jones, 101, of Mapleton died Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Karen Garrison officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Alice Lorine Jones was born Nov. 6, 1906, in Mapleton, to Jesse David and Alice (Wetzel) Hasbrouck. After graduating from Mapleton High School in 1924, she completed normal training and one year at the University of Iowa before she began teaching.
She married Wesley Louis Jones on Dec. 24, 1929. She taught in country schools, Smithland (Iowa) Public School and substituted at Mapleton Public School. Fifth grade was her love, where she helped students reach for their goals. Wes died Aug. 25, 1970.
In addition to teaching, she enjoyed playing bridge and riding horses, especially with her husband, Wes, and the Monona County Saddle Club. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Order of the Eastern Star and the P.E.O.
Honoring her memory are her son and his wife, Rex Hasbrouck and Marilyn Lou (Leonard) Jones; two granddaughters, Lynn Mari' Hanigan and Kris Collette; a grandson, Rex Leonard Jones; granddaughter-in-law, Cynthia Jones; a grandson-in-law, Richard Hanigan; great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Reese Jones, Dalton and Wesley Clark, Julie and Joe Hanigan and Teri and Kelly Swenson; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; and three sisters.
