Monday's Sioux City Council additional action items

SIOUX CITY -- The City Council took action on the following items Monday:

New Buses: Approved buying two new buses from Gillig Corp., Hayward, Calif., for the Sioux City Transit System for $619,900 to replace two old models that have around 450,000 miles apiece and have been in service for 18 to 20 years. The city will get 36-foot low-floor, heavy duty buses in about nine to 12 months. Federal and state grants will pay the majority of the cost.

Police Classes: Approved hiring the following to give classes at the National Training Center, near Sioux Gateway Airport: Combat Solutions, San Diego, for Physical Conflict Resolution, Dec. 1-5, for $18,750; High Tech Crime Institute, Tampa, Fla., for Cell Phone Investigations, Oct. 1-3, for $17,000; Stan B. Walters & Associates, Versailles, Ky., for Kinesic Interview and Interrogation, Levels 1 and 2, Oct. 13-17,.for $11,000; Strategos International, Lee's Summit, Mo., for Immediate Action Response for Undercover Teams, Aug. 4-6, for $14,850.

Sign Change: Adopted a modified site plan for LBR LLC for its office building at 4242 Gordon Drive to allow a sign to be moved from the side of the building to the front of the building.

Tyson Center: Awarded a consulting services agreement to Rink-Tec International, Little Canada, Minn., for $11,000 to oversee installation of hockey goal inserts and work related to the volleyball goal posts needed to host the NAIA National Women's Volleyball Tournament in December.

Avery Outdoor: Authorized paying $22,887 to Avery Outdoor Sign Co. for relocation payments to move two billboards from land the city acquired at 219 Douglas St. and 312 Third St.

Demolition Bill: Approved an agreement to pay Mercy Medical Center $49,000 for the city's half of the demolition cost to remove the former Greyhill Academy, 912 and 914 Fifth St., and properties at 419, 421 and 421 Virginia St. The city plans to build a surface parking lot for people visiting Historic Fourth Street. Mercy accepted the low bid of Herbert Construction for $98,000. The contract does not include the cost of removing asbestos, should it be found in any of the buildings.

Summer Program: Approved an agreement with Mary Treglia Community Center to pay $20,000 for the agency to provide a summer youth program for young people living in the Jones Street Urban Renewal Area. The program for grades K-5 was held at Irving Elementary School.

Paving Program: Approved a change order for $144,564 with Fitch-Stoos Construction Co. for the 2007 Paving Patch Program. The cost is for additional projects added to the contract for parts of Evergreen Court, Ravine Park Drive, Helmer Street, Sherwood Terrace, Vegas Court, Sergeant Road, 11th Street, Sunnybrook Drive, Knollwood Court and Locust Court. That part totals $143,008. The rest of the $1,555 cost is for asphalt patching work that was not part of the original contract.

Treatment Plant: Approved a change order with Foley Co. for $69,817 for the Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvement Project, Phase 1A. The change order covers repairs to the administration building walls, roof modifications for a humidification chamber, locker room revisions to accommodate some pipes, a new entrance sign and other work. A majority of the cost, $427,100, involves the installation of a steel platform at the storage silo for routine maintenance of that silo.

Liquor License: Asked for additional information on the request of the Cattleman's Club, 1701 Dace Ave., to renew its liquor license. Approved liquor license renewals for the Ickey Nickel Bar & Grill, 4700 41st St., and Applebees Neighborhood Grill and Bar, 1700 Hamilton Blvd. Approved temporary transfer of the Tyson Events Center/Long Lines Family Rec Center liquor license for an event outside the Promenade Theatre, 924 Fourth St., on Friday.
