LINCOLN, Neb.(AP) -- Six lakes in the state have high enough levels of e. Coli bacteria that officials are warning people to be careful not to drink the water.
Health alerts warning people of lakes with dangerously high levels of blue green algae often receive lots of publicity. But health officials say that lakes with high e.Coli levels can also be dangerous even though they don't receive as much attention.
Unlike lakes with lots of blue green algae, officials with the Department of Environmental Quality say it is fine to have full body contact with water that has high levels of e.Coli and allow pets to drink the eater.
The lakes with high levels of e.Coli are Branched Oak, Cub Creek 12A, Holmes, Lewis and Clark, Pawnee and Swan Creek 5A.
