Tire gauges: A great idea
Posted: Friday, August 08, 2008
SOUTH SIOUX CITY -- In an attempt to ridicule the Obama campaign, Republicans plan to distribute tire gauges with the words “Barack Obama’s Energy Plan” to Washington reporters. The fact is that inflating our tires to maximum pressure can increase gas mileage by 3 percent. Furthermore, regular maintenance of our vehicles can increase fuel economy by 4 percent and avoiding idling and unnecessary acceleration can up gas mileage by 20 percent.
What the Republicans are not saying is that conservation of fuel is only a small part of Obama’s energy plan, but certainly one of the easiest, cheapest and quickest solutions toward our dependence on oil. The centerpiece of Obama’s plan revolves around promoting clean coal technology, further development of plug-in hybrid cars, and increased availability of wind and solar energy. Obama also has proposed a windfall profits tax on energy companies that have been showing eye-popping profit margins every quarter. This tax would provide $1,000 energy rebate checks for consumers who have been beseiged by high energy costs.
The tire gauges that the Republicans will be distributing not only are a sign of a potentially effective energy plan that may lessen our dependence on oil but may also help to reduce carbon emissions and address climate changes. Therefore, tire gauges are a great idea. -- Hal Bruyere
