JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Cam Jacobs of Sioux City is second after the opening round of the Herman Sani Invitational Friday at Hyperion Field Club here.
Jacobs, a former East High golf standout, fired a 68 and trails defending champion Sean McCarty by two strokes. McCarty, a professional, shot 33-33--66 while Jacobs had 35-33--68.
The Sani Invitational, one of the point tournaments used to determine the Iowa Golf Association player of the year, includes both professional and amateur competitors.
Jacobs, who played the last two seasons at Kirkwood Community College, had the low round for an amateur on Friday.
Jacobs made birdie on the first hole, then reeled off eight consecutive pars to make the turn at 1-under 35. After a bogey on the par-4 12th, he caught fire with three consecutive birdies, then made par on No. 16 and another birdie on the 17th before ending his round with another par and a 3-under 33.
Bret Taylor of Council Bluffs, a former head professional at three different Sioux City courses, was also in red numbers with a 1-under 71. Taylor, who recently regained his amateur status, shot a sizzling 4-under 32 on the back nine after carding 39 on the front.
He is part of a five-way tie for 11th place, which also includes Mike Oimoen of Clear Lake, who won the Iowa Amateur Championship a couple of weeks ago.
