Posted: Monday, August 11, 2008
Here are a few of the stories you will be talking about this week:

TODAY

Look to the stars

We Earth dwellers have marveled at the Perseid meteor shower for more than 2,000 years. At 9 p.m. today, you can join other star gazers at the Sanford Museum Planetarium, 117 E. Willow St. in Cherokee, during the peak of the seasonal shower.

WEDNESDAY

Back to school

Alice Cooper may have sung "School's Out" during Sunday's concert at the Orpheum, but it’s just getting started for many Siouxland teachers. On Wednesday, Kingsley-Pierson teachers and others began prep workdays for the 2008-09 school year.

THURSDAY

Does he have the answer?

Famed oil man T. Boone Pickens thinks he has America’s energy problem solved. Find out if you agree by joining him for an energy town hall meeting at the Le Mars Convention Center, 301 12th Street SE in Le Mars, at 2:30 p.m. No tickets are required.

You go, girl

The women’s gymnastics all-around final, likely to feature West Des Moines’ Shawn Johnson, will be televised by NBC at 7 p.m. The 2007 World Champion will be both a fan and medal favorite.

FRIDAY

Put em in, coach

It’s the moment Little Leaguers from all over the world dream about. The Little League World Series, increasingly a hyped television event, kicks off in Williamsport, Penn., on Friday before wrapping up Aug. 24.

SUNDAY

A golden throw?

The men’s hammer throw finals, featuring, Siouxlanders hope, Sheldon’s Alfred “A.G.” Kruger, begin Sunday. The 29-year-old did not qualify for the finals in 2004.
