" In addition to my previous comment, I would also like to say that it is totally unacceptable for firearm owners to leave guns out where they can be accessed by children/teens.

Adult firearm owners need to use common sense & follow saftey practices as well. "

" First off, I find it offensive that some people think that if a child/teen is shown how to handle a firearm safely that they're going to go out & commit a crime with it.

The issue of teaching firearm saftey in schools is a touchy one. I'm not sure that we should be spending money educating our teachers on how to teach children firearm saftey. Maybe a DARE type program where trained people come to the schools & teach firearm saftey is a better idea.

As for the parents being responsible for teaching the kids, yes, they should be responsible, but the majority of adults aren't versed in gun saftey themselves, so all they can really tell their kids is "Don't touch a gun"; and we all know that doesn't always happen. "

" Free Man makes the most logical argument on this issue. D.A.R.E. teaches the dangers of drugs to school children. The more children are educated on guns, the less likely they will be involved in a shooting accident. Are some of you people for real? Don't shun the gun. If you do, your child may not know what to do when exposed to one. Remember, at one time a car seemed like something you were supposed to fear, and they are every bit as dangerous as a gun! If a student is taught gun safety and commits a gun crime, the student was not compelled to do so because of their knowledge of guns, but rather because they are a BAD PERSON! "

" Guns are only danagerous when put in the hands of dangerous people. Common sense would tell you to educate your child on the dangers of a weapon. A gun is merely a tool that can be used for many purposes including evil. If you own a gun then teach your children what they are and how to properly handle them. My father was a police officer so there he always had guns around. He took me out and showed me what it is capable of doing and how to use it. Even at a young age i understood how dangerous it could be and never dreamed of using it with out him. It is simple show a kid what a gun can do and they will understand. "
