" First off, I find it offensive that some people think that if a child/teen is shown how to handle a firearm safely that they're going to go out & commit a crime with it.

The issue of teaching firearm saftey in schools is a touchy one. I'm not sure that we should be spending money educating our teachers on how to teach children firearm saftey. Maybe a DARE type program where trained people come to the schools & teach firearm saftey is a better idea.

As for the parents being responsible for teaching the kids, yes, they should be responsible, but the majority of adults aren't versed in gun saftey themselves, so all they can really tell their kids is "Don't touch a gun"; and we all know that doesn't always happen. "

A gun is merely a tool that can be used for many purposes including evil. If you own a gun then teach your children what they are and how to properly handle them. My father was a police officer so there he always had guns around. He took me out and showed me what it is capable of doing and how to use it.
