The week ahead: School starts, Olympics end and protesters prepare

Posted: Monday, August 18, 2008
Here are just a few of the stories you will be talking about this week:

TODAY

Who needs ethics?

Well, in Councilman Brent Hoffman's opinion, the Sioux City Council does. Not everyone is sold on it. The council will get its first look today at the proposed ethics policy as drafted by the city attorney.

TUESDAY

No slam dunk

The U.S. Olympic basketball team, nicknamed "The Redeem Team," goes for gold in earnest as the quarterfinals begin in men's basketball. Can Kobe, Carmelo and LeBron lead this team to a gold medal? Or are they doomed to repeat history?

THURSDAY

Are your kids ready?

Too bad if they aren't. School is starting with or without them in the Sioux City Community Schools district. Also, the new Leeds Elementary School, 3919 Jefferson St., makes its debut. Sharpen those pencils, kids. Drivers: Watch out for more youngsters on the streets and sidewalks.

FRIDAY

Say it ain't so

The closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympic Summer Games take place. Sports such as swimming, gymnastics and hand ball will fade from the public consciousness. We'll miss you, Shawn Johnson, Michael Phelps and Liu Xiang.

SATURDAY

It's convention time

The Democratic National Convention Committee will assume control of Invesco Field at Mile High, site of Barack Obama's nomination acceptance speech. Much to the chagrin of event organizers, the Re-Create '68 protest group will also begin training sessions on Saturday for convention protesters.

Season finale

It's also time, this week, to say goodbye to the Sioux City Explorers, who end their regular season home schedule with a Thursday-Saturday series against the St. Paul Saints. And don't forget: The X's are still in the division hunt.
