Olympic notebook

Siouxland grandparents are understandably thrilled this week while thriving with Olympic fever. And it is not because swimmer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals.
For Don and Mae Berry of Storm Lake and Robert and Delores of Spencer, their focus was on granddaughter, Jennifer Barringer, who finished ninth Sunday in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in the Beijing Games.
Barringer didn't get a track and field medal, but the reigning NCAA Division I national champ in the steeple set an American record in the event.
Meanwhile, Onawa resident Claire Joines will be watching her granddaughter, Jennifer Joines, and her U.S. women's volleyball team, which meets Italy today at 10 p.m. (Beijing time) in the quarterfinals.
Claire, 79, though, will watch on television from the home of Jennifer's parents in Milpitas, Calif. Jennifer's parents, David and Jody, are in Beijing for the competition, and Clair is housesitting.
Also paying rapt attention will be Sioux Cityans John and Trina Joines and Dudley and Susie Joines. John and Dudley are David's brothers.
Jennifer, of course, is the two couples' niece.
Claire DeLashmutt Joines is an Onawa native. Her late husband, Jim, was in the military and Jennifer's father, who played football at San Jose State, was actually born in California when his father was stationed there.
The 6-foot-4 Jennifer Joines, named to Team USA in July, was an All-America at Pacific. She didn't play in a win over Japan and a loss to Cuba, but had seven points and was instrumental in a four-game win over Venezuela and also appeared in wins over China and Poland.
Cuba is the No.1-ranked team in the world and Italy was also 4-1 in another pool.
While Barringer finished ninth in the women's, she still set an American record of 9:22.26.
The 21-year-old Barringer was born in Webster City and lived briefly in Ames and Fort Dodge. She attended high school in Oviedo, Fla., and competes collegiately at the University of Colorado.
At CU, she set an collegiate record of 9:29.20 while winning the steeplechase in the NCAA Division I nationals at Drake Stadium in Des Moines in June.
Meanwhile, 1995 Storm Lake High School graduate Aaron Brock continues his duties as the head trainer for the United States men's volleyball team that has won its pool competition in Beijing.
Aaron's father, Steve, lives in Sioux City and his brother, Tyler, lives in Hinton. Aaron also worked for a time as a team trainer for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association.
