City names Payer public works director

Posted: Wednesday, August 20, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- Chris Payer has accepted the position of public works director for the city of Sioux City, City Manager Paul Eckert said Tuesday afternoon.

Payer has worked for the city for nine years and has been the city engineer for the past five years. He has served as acting public works director since July 1. His appointment will take effect next Tuesday.

Eckert said the city will begin recruitment efforts for a new city engineer immediately.

Payer was one of eight "key applicants" for the position, which was advertised locally and nationally, according to Eckert. City Human Resources Director Bridey Hayes conducted the search.

In his tenure as city engineer, Payer led large complex projects such as the Perry Creek Flood Control, Outer Drive Connection and the reconstruction of Military Road. He is a graduate of Iowa State University and a licensed professional engineer.

Prior to working for the city, Payer worked for Irving F. Jensen Co. He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force for eight years and as a chief maintenance engineer.

Payer is a native of Storm Lake, Iowa. He lives in Sioux City with his wife, Teresa and their three children.

The public works job opened up when director Dave Dorsett left on June 27, an exit the city neither announced nor explained. Hayes told the Journal on July 7 that Dorsett had resigned. He had been head of the department for three years.

" Good for Chris....good choice. Hopefully, he won't be driven out of town like others. "

" Chris Payer will do a good job, me thinks. Since Marty Dougherty is already employed by the city though, others have wondered why Jason Geary wasn't offered the job. I thought that was pretty funny. "
