Dialing from long distance, here's the latest information on former Sioux City North girls baskeball all-stater Tanaeya Worden's transfer from NCAA Division I Southern Illinois of the Missouri Valley Conference.
The 5-6 sophomore, who played in 23 games at SIU as a true freshman guard last season, has transferred to NCAA Division II Christian Brothers University, a school of 1,900 students in Memphis, Tenn.
Worden, who helped North to Iowa's Class 4A state championship two years ago, averaged 5.8 points for Southern Illinois, starting three games while averaging nearly 22 minutes a game.
Worden helped North to a 76-18 record in four seasons as a starter.
The Lady Bucks return four starters from a team that went 19-10 last season, including a 6-8 record in the Gulf South Conference.
Three-time defending FCS national champ Appalachian State is No. 1, receiving all 24 first-place votes. North Dakota State, after going 10-1 in its final season in the Great West Conference, is second in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) coaches pre-season poll.
Northern Iowa, ranked fourth, hosts South Dakota on Sept. 6 in Cedar Falls. UNI is also third in the Sports Network pre-season poll where Appalachian and NDSU are also 1-2 and South Dakota State 19th.
North Dakota and South Dakota, members of the old NCAA Division II North Central Conference, are making the transition this season to the Football Championship Subdivision. UND received five votes in the coaches poll.
Maine, which plays at Iowa in a season opener, received four votes. Montana State, USD's foe on Sept. 27, received 23 votes and Cal Poly, the Coyotes' foe in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Oct. 4, is ranked 14th.
Northern Iowa's volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the pre-season poll of the Missouri Valley Conference's 10 coaches. Wichita State is No. 1 and Drake eighth.
UNI's Ashten Stelken, a senior middle blocker, was named to the pre-season all-conference team along with Creighton senior setter Korie Lebeda.
Coe is the choice of league coaches to win the Iowa Conference volleyball title. Coe (67), Simpson (64) and Central (64) drew the most points in the poll while Buena Vista was seventh after going 9-21 overall and 2-5 in the loop last year.
Buena Vista's new coach is Heather Noll, who had been a graduate assistant the past two seasons at Division III power Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Central is also ranked 23rd in the College Sports Network/AVCA Division III national poll. Juniata (Pa.) is No. 1 and defending national champ Washington of St. Louis second. South Dakota State is 20th.
Sioux City Bishop Heelan grad Katie Vondrak, a second-team all-conference pick as a freshman, is one of five returning starters at BV. Also back for the Beavers are Kelli Luitjens, Molly Reuter (Le Mars Community) and Kayla Dekkers. Luitjens had 396 kills and Vondrak 377 while Reuter dished 1,148 assists last season.
Nationally-ranked Morningside (No. 13), Dordt (No. 20) and unranked Briar Cliff get their collective volleyball feet wet (no, it isn't beach volleyball) this weekend in the Texas-Brownsville Invitational in Brownsville, Texas.
The competition will be held at Rivera High School in Brownsville after originally being slated to be played at the South Padre Convention Center on South Padre Island. That facility received severe damage last month during Hurricane Dolly.
Morningside will face 23-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) and Malone today, then Our Lady of Lake and Texas-Brownsville Saturday. The UT-Brownsville Scorpions are ranked 19th and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NAIA national tourney last year.
Briar Cliff tangles with Our Lady of the Lake and Olivet Nazarene today. Malone and Oklahoma City University are the Chargers' opponents Saturday.
Dordt, ranked 20th, faces Malone (Ohio) and Our Lady of the Lake today, then Oklahoma City and Texas-Brownsville Saturday. Our Lady of the Lake, located in San Antonio, Texas, is in just its third season of intercollegiate competition.
Oklahoma City, which will host the NAIA national wrestling tournament next March, was 34-10 last season. Morningside will host the NAIA national volleyball tournament in December at the Tyson Events Center and Long Lines Family Rec Center.
