Pearson Lakes Art Center announces '09 season

By Russ Oechslin Journal correspondent | Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2008
OKOBOJI, Iowa -- Less than a week after "Dave Rowley and Friends" closed the Pearson Lakes Art Center's summer season Thursday night, Director of Performing Arts Andrea Tonsfeldt has announced that the group is already signed to return in 2009 along with nearly two dozen other shows -- some new mixed with returning favorites.

One favorite, "Gaelic Storm," will be making its third appearance on the Lauridsen Theatre stage. The Irish party group sold out a month in advance of the show last year, Tonsfeldt says.

Other returning acts include violinist Michael Antonello, "The Headliners" from the Reggie Schive-Iowa Lakes Community College Summer Jazz Camp, the "Second City" theatre troupe and the six Rowley musicians.

While both Gaelic Storm and Second City are among Tonsfeldt's favorites, she 'says the show she is most looking forward to is jazz trombone player Delfeayo Marsalis who will perform May 14.

PLAC CEO Tom Tourville, a Rock 'n' Roll fan and historian, cites Roger McGuinn, of the legendary rock group, "The Byrds," as the performer who excites him the most, along with soul singer Tad Robinson. McGuinn will appear at the Art Center in September; Robinson in October.

Discount packages available

The performance schedule includes five money-saving packages. But, Tonsfeldt says, tickets also may be purchased individually.

The National Package includes Gaelic Storm, the show band "New Odyssey," Second City, singer Michael Johnson and McGuinn.

In addition to Marsalis, the Blues, Jazz and Zydeco page lists Grammy winner "Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience," along with "The Chicago Rhythm & Blues Kings," with soul singer Tad Robinson

The Performance Package includes the University of Iowa's "Dancers In Company," along with a yet-to-be announced program in conjunction with the University's Hancher Auditorium, Michael Antonello and John Moore's Christmas show. A Milford, Iowa native, Moore sings with New York's Metropolitan Opera.

"Rockin' Jake" will provide some New Orleans fun as a part of the Pomerantz Hall Summer Fun Concert Package, along with the Headliners and Rowley.

The Lakes Community Theatre Package includes four shows, "Twelve Angry Jurors," "A Dickinson of a Christmas," "The Most Massive Woman Wins" and the 1930s-40s musical review, "Music & Memories."

Free shows, speakers, too

Two free shows will include one of Iowa's brightest young roots and folk artists, "The Pines," and the return of the Mission Theatre Company's "Evening with Shakespeare."

The PLAC's "Growing Iowa's Economy" speaker series also will continue with a series of speakers to be announced at a later date.

The discount packages are available by mail at Box 255, Okoboji, Iowa 51355 or phone at (712) 332-7013 before Sept. 6.

Later this week, order forms also will be available on the PLAC's Web site, {M3www.lakesart.org
