Taking care of its people is what makes a country great

Posted: Tuesday, August 26, 2008
ROCK VALLEY, Iowa -- In response to a Sunday Letter to the Editor headlined "Liberalism: Contrary to all that made America great," I believe that how a country takes care of its people is what makes a country great.

Since liberalism is associated with being a Democrat, let's take a look at some social programs under Democratic administrations. We have Social Security and Medicare. Are only liberals benefiting from these programs? Search the Internet for further programs. There is the Rural Electric Administration, FEMA to provide assistance in emergencies, the Civil Rights Act to protect women and minorities from discrimination, support of public universities providing first-class education at lower cost, welfare programs such as food stamps and Aid to Dependent Children. All these programs and more under Democratic administrations. For the Women, Infants, Children program, the credit goes to the Nixon administration.

The writer of Sunday's Letter seems to think he knows the minds of all liberals His statement that liberals hate the military is outrageous and untrue. The use of labels is divisive.

Bless the day when we can disagree agreeably, and once again become a united country. -- Myra Heuer

" I love it. More people that feel the way I do. I loved food stamps in high school I could buy them for half price, but I pay alot more now. Food stamps aren't cheaper (still half price), but I pay alot more taxes. "

" How many people in America die from starvation?
Or how many die from eating disorders?

What country has a written law of 50,000 words concerning the sales of cabage?
How many words are in our Constitution? " "

" So what you are saying is that even though I work hard to carve out a humble existence I must still give to those that refuse to do the same? Shouldnt it be my choice to give to those that are less fortunate instead of having the Govt choose for me? I dont understand why i have to work so hard so my paychecks can be dipped into for those that dont. I dont want to pay for welfare, foodstamps, and free healthcare because I take care of that for myself. I dont have time to worry about those that choose to work deadend jobs or no job at all. "

" LEB, I agree 100% with you, I'm just pointing out it's not multiple choice anymore. "

" Rage ,live alittle taking care of ourselves is not that bad. It is a good thing to work and a good thing to plant potatoes and corn and tomatoes. Then you get a harvest. You get what you work for. Natural law. "
