Newcastle featured at Yankton's welcome center

CROFTON, Neb. -- Newcastle, Neb., will be spotlighted in the coming week at the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center.
From Friday through Sept. 4, visitors to the welcome center along U.S. Highway 81 two miles south of Yankton, S.D., will be able to learn about Newcastle, located approximately 30 miles northwest of Sioux City on Nebraska Highway 12.
Among Newcastle's attractions is the Ionia Volcano, a land formation discovered by Lewis and Clark, and Annie's Dig, a historical archaeological dig. Newcastle also hosts northeast Nebraska's largest one-day threshing show and a parade during its annual Labor Day celebration.
The Corps of Discovery Welcome Center is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Labor Day, then 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily through Memorial Day. For more information, call 402-667-6557.
