Nebraska town to ignore restriction on campaign signs

BEATRICE, Neb. (AP) -- The southeast Nebraska town of Beatrice has agreed to stop enforcing an ordinance that prohibits campaign signs in front lawns until 30 days before an election.

The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has taken exception to the ordinance.

ACLU Nebraska director Laurel Marsh says the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of speech -- not "freedom of speech for a given period of time."

The ACLU has fought such ordinances across the country with notable success.

Some people have already put signs in their yards supporting either Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Obama.
