Hall County inmate dies in custody

Posted: Wednesday, August 27, 2008
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) -- An investigation is under way into the death of a Hall County inmate.

Forty-two-year-old Jeffrey Hansen was being held on a theft charge in the jail in Grand Island since July 31. He was taken to the hospital Sunday evening and died on Monday.

Hall County Attorney Michelle Oldham said an autopsy has been ordered.

Grand Island attorney Rachel Daugherty has been appointed special prosecutor and will lead the investigation into Hansen's death.

A grand jury will review the case. State law requires a grand jury investigation whenever someone dies in custody or during an arrest.
