SIOUX CITY -- "Nature Calls -- Featured Artists," an artwork exhibition, will be on display at Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, 4500 Sioux River Road, Sept. 3-18.
The exhibition includes artwork from local artists who will be participating in the Nature Calls fundraising event Sept. 20. The exhibition may be viewed from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday or 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays in the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center's Junior League Legacy Gallery.
Gary Jernberg of Timber Line Images is the 2008 Nature Calls Featured Artist. Jernberg showcases original wildlife photography and rustic wood furniture. He has created and donated a handmade rustic cedar chest for the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. It will be auctioned to the highest bidder at the Sept. 20 Nature Calls event.
Growing up in the Midwest has brought Jernberg close to the subjects he portrays on film. Born and raised in Sioux City, his interest in the maintenance and preservation of nature's beauty and delicate surroundings is attributed to his late father who spent endless hours with him in the outdoors.
Now, Jernberg shows his appreciation by preserving the beauty of nature on film. He received his diploma from the New York Institute of Photography.
Jernberg will be joined this year by nine additional area artists. Jana Peterson is last year's featured artist and creates unique jewelry by blending sterling silver, natural prairie stones, gem stones and natural accents in her handmade creations. Barry Knapp, another past featured artist, specializes in hand-turned wood bowls using wood harvested from his century farm in the loess hills near Westfield, Iowa. Robert Sissel is known for his original paintings and wildlife art, found locally at Sissel Gallery and throughout the nation in fine art galleries.
Jake Kluver and Jesse Bogenrief will exhibit hand-blown glass vases and creations from their working gallery, Bogenrief Studios, in Spencer, Iowa. Josh Chwirka specializes in pottery, especially wood- and pit-firing techniques, and has been at previous events. Sara Lucart is a 3-D artist and graduate of the University of South Dakota with a fine arts degree in sculpture.
Brenda Schoenherr-Thelen is a local favorite who has taught art classes and painting at the Sioux City Art Center. Her various pieces include realistic oil paintings, commissioned art work and whimsical creations.
Todd Nielsen of Dakota City, will round out the artists. He creates "useable art" and includes natural bone, antler and leather in his creations.
The artists will have additional works on sale at the Nature Calls event beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Masonic Temple in Sioux City. Tickets are on sale now and are available by contacting the Nature Center at (712) 258-0838. A complete listing of auction items and event sponsors is found at www.woodburyparks.com.
