Republicans will win again by embracing their core principles

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- I read with dismay Charlotte Eby's piece in the Journal's Sunday Opinion section. In my opinion, she couldn't be more wrong.

Republicans nationwide lost in '06, not because they've moved too far to the right, but because they've abandoned their core principles. And, what happened nationally affected state and local races all across the country, not just in Iowa. All that Republicans have to do to start winning again is to embrace their core values once again.

As far as moderate Republicans not having a place to go, that's absurd. What, if they can't run the show, they're lost? Good grief, liberal Republicans have all but obliterated the line of demarcation between the Democratics and the Republicans, now, for years. Now, according to Ms. Eby, they're to complete the process by erasing their stance against abortion and special rights for gays. Nonsense. -- Thomas G. Welsh

" To all of you who have to ask, "What are core principles?", I have this to say: "If you've got to ask,for example, 'how many miles per gallon does it get' before deciding whether or not to buy a Hummer, you shouldn't even be considering buying one." The "core principles and values" that made the Republican Party great are its CONSERVATIVE PRINCIPLES AND VALUES. The Republican Party doesn't need any liberals or moderates- like termites invading a house or rats a ship- "highjacking" the Party once again. Did I "splain" that in simple enough terms "fer ya to undie stand"? "

" The author of the letter discusses "core principles," but doesn't say what they are. If this is religion...forget it. The recent trend of mixing politics and religion is doomed to failure. It is okay for the Religious Right to be part of the Republican Party, but not to dominate it. In Iowa, it will be a self-destructive thing. "

Please keep that in mind before you share with us your big bowl of crazy. "

" Republican's lost because they abused their power and they got caught in more scandals than you can shake a stick at showing the core values was a farce.

That is not pat on the back to the democrats either, they too have squandered their chances "

" to Pariah: I am all to aware of it, and wrestling that power from them now, at this late date, will take nothing short of a revolution of sorts. We have laid complacent for far to long. I hope it's not to late. "
