Nebraska college savings plan honored

Posted: Sunday, August 31, 2008
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska college savings plan that has received repeated recognition is adding one more honor to the mix.

The online college savings site SavingforCollege.com has named the College Savings Plan of Nebraska a top performer in a three-year composite study among plans sold directly to investors. Plans can also be sold through a broker.

The plan is one of four college savings plans sponsored by Nebraska. Better known as 529 plans, they offer a tax-advantaged vehicle for people to save for college expenses.

State Treasurer Shane Osborn says he is not surprised by the latest honor for the plan that has long been known as a good value.

He says having thoughtful strategies to pay for higher education will remain one of his priorities.
