If you need a snack at work, Sarah Nelson, the dietitian at Hy-Vee at 2827 Hamilton Blvd., suggests selecting these items from the vending machine.
1. Pretzels. They have lower fat and calories.
2. Trail mix. Contains nuts for protein and usually raisins.
3. Baked chips. They have less fat and fewer calories than regular chips.
4. Chex mix. Brand matters. Chex has lower fat than other brands.
5. 3 Musketeers. If you have to have chocolate, this candy bar has less fat than many others. Try to eat only half and save the other half for later.

1. Pork rinds. They're high in saturated fat, which contributes to heart disease.
2. Snack cakes. Also high in saturated fat and many can be high in triglycerides and calories.
3. Chips. Usually you eat more than the recommended portion because they're not filling, so you end up eating more fat.
4. Regular soda pop. It's just sugar calories.
5. Pickles. They're low in calories, but can contain all the sodium you need in one day. High sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure.
