WIT to hold board election Sept. 9

By Earl Horlyk, Journal staff writer | Posted: Friday, September 05, 2008
SIOUX CITY -- Voters in four Western Iowa Tech Community College districts will be asked to mark their ballots for representatives to the WIT board of directors when they go to the polls for the Sept. 9 school board election.

* District 4: Incumbent Bill Lyle, a board member since 1999, will face off against Flora M. Lee. Sioux City voting precincts 2,8,11, 12, 14 and 28 are in District 4.

* District 6: Incumbent Eldon Schroder, a board member since 1984, will compete against Jan I. Olson. District 6 encompasses Sioux City precincts 21-23 and 25-27.

* District 7: Two names will be on the ballot, but only incumbent Curt Grigg, a board member since 2002, is electable. After the ballot was printed, officials discovered that John P. Van Eldik does not live within the District 7 boundaries, and he was disqualified. Sioux City precincts 13, 20, 24, 29 and 36 are in District 7, as are the Lawton-Bronson and Sergeant Bluff-Luton school districts and Plymouth County.

* District 9: Incumbent Derrick Franck, a board member since 1981, is running unopposed. Crawford, Monona, Harrison and Shelby counties are in District 9.

Terms are three years for the nine-member board, which meets the second Monday of every month.

Board president Robert Rasmuss said there are no "hot-button issues" facing the board but that enrollment remains a concern.

"I think that's true of all community colleges," he said. "But, this year, WITCC has the highest enrollment (5,426 students registered for the 2008-09 school year) we've had since 2004."

"That seems to go to a long way in demonstrating our commitment to the community and to quality education," Rasmuss said.
