VERMILLION, S.D. -- Meryl J. Reed, 94, of Vermillion passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point, S.D.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Vermillion, with the Rev. Brook McBride officiating. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Order of the Eastern Star service conducted by the Vermillion Juno Chapter 44, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home in Vermillion. Condolences may be sent online to www.koberfuneralhome.com.

Meryl Reed was born Aug. 5, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Elsa (Scheibe) Peterson, on a farm near Wessington, S.D. She attended county school in Beadle County, S.D. and graduated from Wessington High School in 1932. She attended Eastern Normal (now Dakota State University) and taught in county schools in Beadle County for three years.

She married Carl Reed on June 4, 1939, in Wessington. They lived in Winner, S.D., Mitchell, S.D. and later settled in Vermillion, where Carl served as county agent for five years. He managed Barlett Grain and Feed Mill, where she served as his bookkeeper for many years. She also was a bookkeeper and clerk for several businesses.

She belonged to several clubs and organizations and was a member and past president of the Order of the Eastern Star, P.E.O., Clay County Extension, United Methodist Church Women and Harmony Club and grand representative of Order of the Eastern Star. She was very active in the Methodist Church, teaching, taking care of the church flowers and singing in the choir for 45 years.

Golf was her greatest joy and she was able to play, with 2005 being her final round. She won several Vermillion City Women's Championships and attended many state tournaments, placing second in the Women's Senior Division Championships in 1975. After placing third in the 1976 State Women's Senior Division Championship, she became president of the South Dakota Women Golf Association.

She started quilting when she was 9 years old and started a quilting club in Vermillion in 1975, which is still active. In 1975, one of her quilts received Best of Show of all needlework at the South Dakota State Fair. She also loved playing bridge and enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers.

She is survived by her sister, Eileen (Leo) Cancio of Washington, D.C.; two sons, James of Vermillion and Gary (Shari) of Sioux Falls, S.D.; two grandsons, Carl Towner of Vermillion and Bill (Tina) Towner of Fort Pierce, Fla.; two granddaughters, Suzanne (Patrick) McGrath of Overland Park, Kan., and Aimee (Todd) Uher of Shawnee, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; her daughter, JoAnn Morse; four brothers, Clifford, Alfred, Richard and Robert Peterson; and two sisters, Mildred Crossman and Elva Hanson.
