DWU men take lead at GPAC Qualifier

MITCHELL, S.D. -- Dakota Wesleyan's men's golf team ran away with the title, shooting a 289 at the first Great Plains Athletic Conference Qualifier Saturday on its home course at Wild Oak Golf Club.
The qualifying meets are a new format for the GPAC and the NAIA. The old format consisted of a 36-hole GPAC championship meet and a 36-hole region championship meet, the latter of which determined the team that would earn an automatic berth to the national meet.
Despite less-than-ideal conditions with rain and cold temperatures, all five DWU golfers flirted with par all morning and all five finished individually in the top 10. The Tigers' Nick Gates and Nebraska Wesleyan's E.J. Hamilton shared first place with two-under par rounds of 70.
Nebraska Wesleyan was second at the meet with a 301 while third-place Hastings shot a 302. NWU, Hastings and the other teams will try to make up the double-digit deficits in the other three GPAC Qualifier meets.
DWU's Brett Abbotts, Tyler Evenson and Andrew Farrand were in a five-way tie for third place with Northwestern College's Luke Vermeer and Justin Pannkuk, all at 73.
The second GPAC Qualifier will be hosted by Doane at Wilderness Ridge at Crete, Neb., on Sept. 18.
The first GPAC Women's Qualifier will be held Sept. 15, hosted by Morningside College at Whispering Creek in Sioux City.
