SIOUX CITY -- Bomgaars is coming to the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
The Sioux City-based retail chain has acquired three M&M stores in the southwest Minnesota cities of Pipestone, Slayton and Luverne.
After the inventory is taken for the final time on Sept. 30, the three stores are scheduled to reopen two days later, Oct. 2, under the Bomgaars Supply name.
The stores are the first Minnesota locations for the Bomgaars farm and home chain, founded in downtown Sioux City in 1952. The privately owned, fourth-generation firm, headquartered in Sioux City, currently has 43 stores in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, employing more 1,200.
Bomgaars acquired the M&M stores, which the McCallum family had operated for some 50 years. In a statement released by Bomgaars, M&M president John McCallum said he's "sad to leave, but glad to pass the torch to Bomgaars, knowing they'll continue the high level of service to their customers."
Pam Winebrenner, vice president of human resources for Bomgaars, said the company plans to offer positions to all existing M&M employees.
Bomgaars has been in an expansion mode in recent months. The retailer, which sells merchandise in categories that include apparel, housewares, toys, hardware, automotive and lawn and garden, also plans to open a new store in Rock Valley, Iowa, this fall, and expand stores in Mapleton, Iowa, and Wagner, S.D.
