SPENCER, Iowa -- A barn was destroyed and one sheep perished when fire broke out early this morning at a Spencer farm.
At 12:56 a.m. today, the Clay County/Spencer Communications Center received a report from a neighbor that a farm building at 3115 240th Ave. was on fire.
The Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that when deputies arrived, one of the buildings was fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters from Fostoria and Dickens Fire and Rescue responded to the blaze.
The sheriff's office said the owner, Bill Elliott, who was not home at the time of the fire, used the barn for making diesel fuel. Other farm buildings near the barn, caught fire as a result of the fuel containers exploding, according to the sheriff's office.
In addition to the main building, a barn roof of another shed sustained severe damage and vinyl siding on one side the house melted, Fostoria Fire Chief Tim Kelsch reported. At least one sheep was lost in the fire, but no other buildings were lost. Damages are estimated at more than $100,000.
Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow said one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation by Fostoria Fire and Rescue and the State Fire Marshal's Office.
