Late touchdown lets Waldorf overtake Dordt

Posted: Sunday, September 14, 2008
FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Dordt dominated nearly every statistical category, but came out on the short end of a 16-13 score against Waldorf College in NAIA football action here Saturday.

The Defenders, playing in only their second varsity collegiate football game, outgained Waldorf 403-197 but committed four turnovers. One of those turned into a 32-yard touchdown on a fumble return by John Lawson midway through the third quarter.

Waldorf, which made the jump from a two-year institution to a four-year school in 2003, scored the game-winning touchdown on a 37-yard scamper by Erskinte Henderson with 3:19 remaining in the game.

Dordt's Ben Robbins put his team ahead 13-10 with a five-yard touchdown run with 4:07 left. Scott Walden hit Alex Henderson for a two-point conversion pass.

The clinching touchdown also came after one of three Dordt fumbles. Henderson dashed to paydirt on the first play after the fumble.

The Defenders took a 2-0 lead with a safety just under five minutes into the game. Waldorf was punting from its own 25-yard line when the center snap sailed over the punter's head and out of the end zone.

Matt Wheatley's 33-yard field goal with 4:22 left in the first quarter were the final points scored in the first half. Waldorf, then, clung to a 3-2 lead until the third quarter.

Dordt's Reuben Faber booted a 33-yard field goal with 10:50 left in the third quarter, making the score 5-2. Lawson's fumble return gave Waldorf a 10-5 advantage in the see-saw contest.

Colton Harms of Waldorf was the game's leading rusher with 101 yards on 21 carries. Dordt, though, outgained the Warriors 199-152 on the ground and Walden also passed for 204 yards.

John Blair led Dordt with 86 yards on 14 carries while Charles Milton tacked on 67 yards on 12 totes. Walden completed 15 of 27 passes while Joey Vander Schaaf had seven receptions for 124 yards.

Waldorf picked up its first win after one-sided losses to Iowa Wesleyan (41-0) and William Penn (41-3). Dordt lost to 13th-ranked Northwestern 42-0 in its debut last weekend.

Dordt plays at No. 7 Morningside on Saturday.
