Judgment is the true test of leadership

SERGEANT BLUFF -- A Letter to the Editor in Tuesday’s Journal headlined “McCain’s age, experience: A ‘monumental plus’” claims that John McCain’s 72 years gives him an advantage as president. I think that the writer mistakes age for judgment, which is the true test of leadership.
Both Barack Obama and McCain have experience in politics that amounts to a decade or more for each of them. Let’s keep in mind what each candidate’s experience amounted to on two of the major issues facing this country - the war and the economy.
Barack Obama broke with public opinion and most of the members of his party in opposing the war in Iraq. He predicted early that the war would be a distraction from the true terrorist threat. McCain was a cheerleader for the war and bought into the mindset that we would be greeted as liberators. The younger Obama was the wiser leader. On the economy, Sen. Obama has consistently talked about the irresponsible and corrupt policies that have led to the economic crisis on Wall Street. But on the same day the stock market fell over 500 points, on Monday, John McCain said “the fundamentals of the economy are strong.” Sen. Obama has displayed judgment in leadership that exceeds that of Sen. McCain on the major issues of our time. That is the most important factor of this election. -- Dennis M. Lee
