Art to 'Celebrate the Hills' on display in Moorhead

By Becky Irvine, Journal correspondent | Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008
MOORHEAD, Iowa -- Artists' interpretations of the landscapes, animals and native flora of the Loess Hills in all four seasons are on display at the 14th annual "Celebrate the Hills" juried art exhibit at Moorhead Cultural Center.

Works in oil, acrylic and watercolor as well as digital media and sculpture are featured and range in size from 6 by 7 inches to 24 by 36 inches. Some are for sale, according to cultural center board member Ruth Pickle.

Artists represented this year are from the Loess Hills area, Ames, Iowa, and Omaha. "There is also an entry from a 93-year-old artist from Albuquerque, N.M.," Pickle said.

Mary Lou Wright won Best of Show for her work titled "Into the Valley." Pickle won the Judge's Award for her digital media entry, "Hungry Three."

Awards of Excellence winners are Duane Simmons, for his oil painting titled "Evening Twister," Sheila Lindsey for her oil painting called "Kalico Kate's," Linda Herman for an acrylic painting titled "Missouri Valley Mosaic" and Bettina Perkins for her watercolor, "Loess Hills."

Norma Coret of Woodbine, Iowa, president of Town & Country Arts of Harrison County, judged the exhibit's 38 entries.

The exhibit marks the cultural center's 15th anniversary of bringing art and cultural events to the Loess Hills area in Monona County. The center, governed by an all-volunteer board, opened in 1993 in the Wharton Drug Store building after it was renovated. In 1994, it hosted a major art exhibit, "Land of the Fragile Giants:

Landscapes, Environments and People of the Loess Hills," co-sponsored by Iowa State University.

The exhibit went on tour to art museums throughout Iowa and around the world, ending at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.
