Jividen Cup has a new home
Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008
The Dakota Dunes Super Amateur is now history, but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the competitive golf season in Siouxland.
The 13th annual Jividen Cup Match Play Championship will unfold in new surroundings on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12.
After 12 years at Green Valley Golf Course, site of three of Sioux City’s “major” tournaments, the Jividen Cup has moved to beautiful Whispering Creek Golf Club.
Briar Cliff University golfer Billy Keane will defend his title in the event named for the late Mike Jividen, arguably the best match play golfer these parts have ever seen. Jividen, who won the Sioux Valley Amateur in Cherokee, Iowa’s oldest match play event, seven times, passed away in 1992 at the age of 45.
Keane, ironically, defeated Todd Sapp of Sioux City in last year’s event. Sapp, who has a pretty salty match play record himself, designed Whispering Creek, which played host to the 2006 Iowa Amateur Championship.
Qualifying runs from Saturday (Sept. 27) through Oct. 9. Entry fee is $50, which includes an 18-hole qualifier and a cart. Cart fees for the championship weekend (Oct. 11-12) will be a daily rental.
Those wishing to enter, or for more information, contact the Whispering Creek pro shop at (712) 276-3678.

I don’t know about you, but there was some pretty impressive shot-making going on in last weekend’s Ryder Cup matches.
Anthony Kim and Boo Weekley stole the show as the United States wrestled the cup back from the Europeans for the first time since 1999. I can’t remember the last time I watched so many putts roll into the hole from all kinds of distances.
Of course, it was predicted in this space a week ago that the Euros would keep the cup. I’m glad I was wrong.
