Big day by Masters carries Wayne State to victory

FAYETTE, Iowa -- Logan Masters had season-highs of 10 catches and 162 yards, leading Wayne State to a 34-14 Northern Sun Conference football triumph over Upper Iowa at Eischeid Stadium here Saturday.
Masters, a junior from Storm Lake, Iowa, had touchdown receptions of 22 and 25 yards from Silas Fluellen. Both of the touchdown catches came in the first half, the second with six seconds remaining before intermission, giving the Wildcats a 17-7 lead.
Nick Hope kicked his second field goal of the game with 10:07 left, accounting for the only points in the third quarter. Mario Melvin's 44-yard punt return set up a one-yard plunge by Eric Meyer with 14:20 left in the game.
After Upper Iowa's Ben Curran threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Lawrence Hellams, cutting the deficit to 27-14, Wayne State tacked on an insurance score. Travis Rhone, who led the Wildcats with 54 rushing yards on 10 carries, had a 10-yard touchdown run with 8:08 remaining.
Wayne State racked up 401 yards of total offense to 273 for the Peacocks. Fluellen completed 18 of 29 passes for 291 yards while Masters extended his streak of games with at least two catches to 29. Robert Perry added four receptions for 75 yards.
Senior outside linebacker Reno Bloomquist led Wayne State with nine tackles, including one sack and two tackles for loss for 15 yards. Junior Ryan Reeves added seven stops and his team-high third interception of the season.
Wayne State, now 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC, hosts Bemidji State for homecoming on Saturday. Upper Iowa fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
