Spencer will observe Green Day Tuesday

By Russ Oechslin, Journal correspondent | Posted: Monday, October 06, 2008
SPENCER, Iowa -- City officials and Spencer Municipal Utilities are looking to turn the city green -- at least for a day.

Spencer's first-ever Green Day on Tuesday is designed to raise awareness of the need to conserve energy, protect the environment and recycle, said Curtis Dean, the utility company's communications director.

Dean is challenging Spencer residents to save energy and recycle more by observing Green Day.

-- Walk, ride a bike or carpool to work to save gas.

-- Start recycling or recycle more. Spencer's Recycling Committee will unveil a major new effort to increase participation in the city's curbside recycling program.

-- Change A Light. On Green Day, utility customers are invited to bring an incandescent light bulb to the Spencer Municipal Utilities office and get a free compact fluorescent bulb in return. Replacing just five light bulbs with compact florescent could save more than 250 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, Dean said.

-- Recycle fluorescent lamps. If thrown in the trash and sent to the landfill, fluorescent lamps can pollute the groundwater with mercury. The utility company accepts fluorescent lamps for environmentally friendly recycling free of charge at its customer service center.

-- Pick up and install an energy and water conservation kit. Kits are provided free of charge to Spencer residents.

Utility company employees will visit several nonprofit organizations in Spencer on Tuesday to install energy-saving devices.
