SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Fifteen pigs rescued from summer floods in Iowa are coming to West Virginia.
Farm Sanctuary plans to transport the pigs to PIGS Animal Sanctuary in Shepherdstown on Tuesday.
The animals were among more than 60 piglets and breeding sows rescued from a levee in Oakville, Iowa, in June and July.
Farm Sanctuary national shelter director Susie Coston says the pigs were nursed back to health after suffering from dehydration, third-degree burns from the sun and lung damage from taking in contaminated water as they swam for their lives. Some were also emaciated.
PIGS Animal Sanctuary executive director Melissa Susko says the sanctuary is a place where "a pig can be a pig."
