City staff wants to continue stormwater fee
Posted: Tuesday, October 07, 2008
SIOUX City -- The city administration laid out the case to continue charging property owners a storm water utility fee in order to pay for stormwater projects. The fee, which has been operational since 1990, is set to expire in 2011.
Finance director Bob Padmore and Ellen Myers, environmental services manager, asked the council to continue the charges for another 15 year and to vote on the matter in December.
"We have more than 1,000 miles of public and private storm sewers we need to maintain," Myers said.
The fee was started to help pay the city's $36 million share of the $100 million Perry Creek Flood Control Project. However, the fee, which raises $1.2 million a year, won't pay the entire cost and bonds have been issued.
