Vermillion in second in South Dakota state golf

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. -- Vermillion, the defending South Dakota Class A boys golf state champions, sits in second place following the first day of play at Southern Hills Golf Course in this seson's state meet Monday.
Aaron Steele, a junior, had the low round for the Tanagers with a 81. Vermillion shot a 331 for the opening 18 holes and trails Sioux Falls Christian by 19 strokes.
Sioux Falls Christian, led by the first day individual leader Rainey Reynolds' 73, stood at 312.
Vermillion received counting scores on the first day from Eric Ustad (82), Cole Andre (83) and Jake Hogen (85). The Tanagers Zach McDonald had a 108.
Dakota Valley is tied for eighth at 353 after day one as the Panther sophomore Taylor White opened with an 83. Eliot Bacon had an 85 and was followed by Josh Oakley (88), Keegan Johnson (97) and Kyle Hooks (106).
Elk Point-Jefferson senior Jeremiah Curry, playing as an individual, shot a 91.
Meanwhile, in Class AA in Rapid City, Yankton has the first day lead at 311 thanks to seniors Jordan Mueller and Marc Gubbels, who each shot 75 and are tied with Kyle Kopplin of Sturgis as individual leaders.
Defending state champions Sioux Falls Washington sit in second place at 318 while Watertown is in third at 319.
Yankton also received scores from Tyler Frick (78), Gabe Messler (83), Chris Hoffman (85) and Dillon May (85).
