Rushing explosion carries CBAL past East, 56-42
Pollow sets another school passing mark for Black Raiders

On a night when East's Taylor Pollow came through with another school-record passing performance, an unheralded sophomore from Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln stole the show.
Austin Ebertkowski exploded for 438 yards, the third-best rushing performance in Iowa high school football history, leading the visiting Lynx to a 56-42 Missouri River Activities Conference triumph over East Friday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
Ebertkowski, a 6-foot, 175-pound sophomore making his first varsity start, toted the pigskin 40 times and scored four touchdowns. In the long and storied history of Iowa prep football, only Don Larsen of Alden and Jason Scales of West Des Moines Valley have had better single-game efforts.
Larson rambled for a state-record 455 yards against Renwick on Oct. 29, 1954 while Scales, now playing at Iowa State University, amassed 450 yards against Mason City on Oct. 17, 2003.
"Austin played an outstanding game," said Abraham Lincoln Coach Justin Kammrad. "We were able to get the ball to get the ball to him and he was able to run and run. He's a very talented individual who, coming into the game, didn't know if he could do it. Now, he's very confident in himself and the rest of the guys are confident in him."
Ironically, Ebertkowski was in the lineup because Dustin Davis, a senior and three-year starter for the Lynx, suffered a separated shoulder in last week's loss to Fort Dodge. Davis had rushed for 1,107 yards in six previous games.
"My line did an awesome job," said Ebertkowski. "The receivers were blocking well and the fullbacks were blowing people up. Sioux City East was battling with us the whole game, it was great."
Ebertkowski, who spent the entire game running through the Black Raider defense, scored on a pair of five-yard runs, a 60-yard scamper and a one-yard plunge. Abraham Lincoln racked up a whopping 645 yards of total offense, with quarterback Tyler Johnson adding three touchdown runs and 123 passing yards.
Pollow, East's outstanding senior quarterback, completed 30 of 42 passes for a school-record 436 yards and five touchdowns. Pollow shattered his own school record of 410 yards in a 39-27 loss to Urbandale on Sept. 19.
Moreover, Pollow continued to move up the school single-season charts. He has now passed for 1,737 yards, trailing only Kevin Kruse (1,747 in 1999) and Greg Adams (1,858 in 1985).
East rallied from a 21-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter to tie the game at 21-21 on a 71-yard screen pass from Pollow to Britt Anderson with 7:35 left in the second quarter. Anderson, a junior, had 14 catches for 198 yards while sophomore Quenton James added 13 receptions for 175 yards.
James had touchdown receptions of 25, 17, five and five yards while senior Trevor Miller returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score.
After the Black Raiders battled back to tie, Abraham Lincoln got two more touchdowns before halftime. Johnson scored on a 10-yard run while Ebertkowski broke loose for his 60-yard scoring jaunt. By intermission, Ebertkowski had already racked up 220 yards on 16 carries.
Abraham Lincoln scored again on its first possession of the second half but Miller returned the ensuing kickoff to paydirt. East then recovered an onside kick and marched 56 yards in nine plays, pulling within 41-35 on a five-yard pass from Pollow to James.
It was 49-35 at the end of the third quarter, but the combination of Pollow and James struck again on the first play of the fourth quarter. CBAL's last touchdown came at the 8:37 mark on a three-yard run by Johnson and East was driving again but turned it over on downs after a costly five-yard penalty on fourth-and-one from the 35.
The Lynx marched to the Black Raider 1-yard line, but took a knee as time expired.
"It was pretty simple stuff they were running, but we just couldn't stop them," said East Coach Steve Zediker. "I guess they were more physcial than we were and we weren't filling, we'll have to take a look at it.
"It's very disappointing to score 42 points and not win. We just have to look at the defense and see what we can do different for next week."
Abraham Lincoln moved to 3-4 overall while East, suffering its sixth straight loss, fell to 1-6. The Black Raiders play West on Friday.
